Australia: Govt fails to reveal carbon footprint figures, Oppn says

The Queensland Opposition says the State Government has not come through on its promise to provide a clear picture of its carbon footprint. Government departments and agencies were required to report on greenhouse gas emissions in their annual reports this year.

Opposition environment spokesman David Gibson says most reports do not provide historical comparisons and do not include all activities that generate emissions.

But he says some of the figures are alarming.

“We’ve seen over a 7,000 tonne blowout just in the Department of EPA [Environmental Protection Agency] – now that’s ridiculous,” he said.

“If this Government wants us to take them seriously on the environment, they’ve got to do more than just talk the talk because clearly on greenhouse gases they’re not walking the walk.”

Queensland Sustainability and Climate Change Minister Andrew McNamara says it is important that the emissions are published.

“I’m very pleased that the EPA is leading the way in making sure that we start publishing our own emissions profiles so that we can see if they’re increasing and also then so we can then go about the process of offsetting what can’t be reduced at the front end,” he said.
