SAN FRANCISCO, CA - October 20, 2008 - The Center for Resource Solutions announced today it has certified carbon offsets used in Hess Corporation’s new C-Neutral product as Green-e(R) Climate Certified. New York-based Hess Corporation joins the growing network of retail greenhouse gas reduction (carbon offset) providers that offer products certified by Green-e Climate, the nation’s leading certification and verification program for retail offsets.

Through C-Neutral, Hess engineers calculate the carbon emissions associated with a customer’s energy usage and include enough carbon offsets with the energy purchased to make it up to 100 percent carbon neutral. Hess C-Neutral’s carbon offsets have met or exceeded Green-e Climate’s strict standards for project verification and measurement, consumer transparency, and truth-in-marketing claims, and has been granted the use of the Green-e Climate Certified logo.

“By certifying C-Neutral’s carbon offsets with Green-e Climate, Hess is showing that it takes offset quality seriously by providing its customers with transparency and the assurance that the offsets they are purchasing are real, additional, and verified,” said Jane Valentino, Green-e Climate senior analyst. “We are pleased to have them in the program.”

Carbon offsets used in Hess C-Neutral are sourced from landfill gas projects certified by the Voluntary Carbon Standard (VCS); and domestic renewable energy certified by the Green-e Climate Protocol for Renewable Energy, a strict protocol for determining the eligibility of domestic renewable energy projects to provide offsets. By purchasing Hess C-Neutral, companies will support currently available renewable resources as well as aid the development of new landfill gas projects and renewable resources to be built in the U.S.

“Demand from customers for environmentally responsible energy solutions has never been stronger,” said Gene Kutcher, Hess Energy Marketing vice president of sales. “Hess is in a unique position to be able to offer our customers a comprehensive and flexible energy solution like C-Neutral, and that’s particularly important when you consider that C&I sectors are responsible for almost half of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions. Our customers count on our 75-year reputation for quality, so we’re very pleased to be able to offer them the assurance of Green-e Climate Certified offsets as part of C-Neutral.”

Green-e Climate is a consumer-protection program requiring that greenhouse gas emission reductions be verified according to strict project-level certifications that ensure the reductions have taken place, are permanent, and come from projects that would not have happened under a “business as usual” scenario. Sellers of certified offsets must provide customers with a product content label that explains where the reductions were sourced from, including the locations and types of projects, such as renewable energy, forestry, and methane capture. Sellers must also undergo a yearly audit to ensure their supply of offsets matches their sales, and comply with Green-e Climate’s consumer-disclosure and truth in advertising requirements.
