While you must have seen companies that are making good cash from CDM and offset sales, the South Koreans have moved one step forward to encompass the ordinary public in the quest for a cleaner future.

October 2008 will probably be the month that will bring with itself the nation’s “carbon cashbag” scheme, which will let the common people earn carbon points that will bring benefits in multiple ways. The Ministry of Knowledge Economy revealed that these points will be awarded for purchasing highly energy-efficient appliances and gadgets like refrigerators, DVD players, phones and radios. People who earn such points will be eligible for discounts on utility bills, public conveyance, purchase of another appliance, and even on cultural events.
“Ordinary people can receive points by using their OK Cashbag cards, which have been issued to 30 million people so far, or they can apply for a new card that is specifically for accruing carbon points,” reported a government official.
SK Marketing & Company manages both the abovementioned cards. The government claims that distribution of cash rewards in the form of carbon points will increase the demand for energy-efficient appliances and would also raise awareness amongst the populace.
